Mathematicians

1st Math Unit:
Place Value, Addition, and Subtraction.

Number sense is the baseline requirement to continue growing as mathematicians. We are also learning precise math vocabulary, so we can best understand and express our reasoning, while those around us have an appreciation for our thoughts and logic.

We are expanding the way we look at and think about numbers. In addition to standard addition and subtraction algorithm, students are stretching their mind muscle. They are solving for sum and difference by using expanded form and number line addition and subtraction. In using expanded form and number line, students develop a deeper understanding of number sense. 

Through expanded form addition and subtraction, students are developing a deeper understanding of regrouping as needed when borrowing and carrying numbers. They are also strengthening their minds capacity for mental math.
